Art Curriculum K – 8 Overview
Grades N-2: Introduction to basic art media (crayons, markers, watercolor paint…) is made at each appropriate grade level. Basic art activities are taught and practiced (scissor handling, glue use, primary color mixing…). Picture book connections are intertwined in most lessons. The elements of art (color, line, and shape) are experimented with through directed drawings/step-by-step projects; although flexible expectations are set, each child’s unique creativity is encouraged.
Grades 3-5: Through further exploration of various art media, students continue to apply, and hone their understanding of, the basic elements of art. These are expanded on with the addition of integrating simple ideas regarding form, space, texture and value. Knowledge is also pushed further regarding perspective, and overall composition. Art history is often introduced, and woven throughout lessons. Consideration and encouragement of creative expression continues, within the parameters of the project’s expectation.
Grades 6-8: Students continue to explore their practice of the seven elements of art via use of all available art media. The principles of design are slowly introduced and practiced, at each appropriate grade level. Connections to art history are made in the majority of projects; consideration and critique of others’ artwork is discussed. Overall craftsmanship, while meeting the expectations for each project, is focused on; within that, experimentation with individual style is encouraged.
